Like you, I've used the other methods, but they're so complicated. By the time I was done, I had chewed through all of my fingernails.
Whereas, the Advanced method is sooo easy and fast! Let it do most of that work for you, including retaining your site's modifications. IIRC, It runs through your site looking for modified pages, tells you which ones they are, then has you export then upload those after updating the main stuff (database and other files).
It's better still if you haven't made any HTML modifications. Then it won't find anything that you'll need to export and you can skip that process and let it finish up.
It's a semi-automated process that if you've done the other update methods, it proves you can read and follow steps. If you can do that, you're ready for the easy way, the Advanced update method.

Advanced update from 3.3.14 to 3.3.15 went so quickly!
Super easy! By far the best way to update a forum that has modifications to it. It's only strange at how simple the process is and I'm by no means an advanced PHPBB user, but I can read.

I think it took me less than 30 minutes and that included running new database and site backups on the host service.
Yeah, baby! Thanks to all who keep us running smoothly!
